BACKGROUND

I am traditionally a wood and metal worker. I have spent lots of time in workshop environments including my own building sculptural objects, tools, and tinkering with mechanical objects. This background has helped me transition into a newer field of experimentation which includes light, sound and projection. While still using both analog and digital techniques, my work plays with movement and sound within a space. For example, recent projects have been focused on the motion of a pendulum.

I have worked as a fisherman off the coast of Baja California before I decided to study Time Based Design at Academy Minerva, Groningen. This experience sparked  my fascination  for motion and space because of the oceans vastness and seemingly infinite appearance.

San Diego Urban Timber

Driving on a freeway near home, I spotted a logyard in the middle of a urban city. I had to stop and find out more. Over the next months I had developed a connection with the shop and its people, and I soon began working as the furniture shop assistant and occasional sawmill assistant. The goal of the business was to reclaim downed urban trees and give them a new life as fine furniture instead of being turned to mulch. Experience here not only gave me technical skills for craftsmanship, but also an entirely new perspective on wood and its usability.

Sea Related Work

In the summer months, the Gulf of California on the pacific Ocean becomes warmer, attracting a large variety of sealife. Fishing in this region had been a passtime until my mid teen years. I began to clean the boats after a day of fishing in exchange of fishing for free. As time passed I became empolyed and most of my weeks during summer months were spent at sea. The sea brought much inspiration for projects I could then do on land once the fishing season had ended.

2021- Present

Academie Minerva

Both of these environments I loved very much, however, I had to pursue an education before I became trapped in working these jobs for the rest of my life. For varoious reasons, I chose to move to Europe and study a specific field of design. Time Based Design is a field which involves light, sound, and projection. Its main focus it to tell a story through these mediums. Because of the freedom of this field, one is able to combine several mediums to influence a space. In my work, materials such as wood, metal, and stone have a story to tell, therefore light, sound, and other mediums are used to bring out this story from the material itself.
